Unveiling the Legacy: African American Veterans Memorial Wall

Honor the brave African American veterans in Western North Carolina by exploring their stories and recognizing their service on this virtual memorial wall.

Mission

This virtual Veterans Memorial Wall is an ongoing project that is intended to preserve the legacy of African American veterans in Western North Carolina, honor their service and sacrifice, and create a lasting tribute that celebrates their contributions to our nationʼs history.

Our mission is to ensure that the stories and experiences of African American veterans are not only remembered, but that their stories are accessible to any who may wish to recognize their service. By providing a place of reflection and remembrance, we aim to educate future generations about the significant impact these individuals have had on our communities and our country.

South Asheville Cemetery
Originally beginning as a burial ground for enslaved people, South Asheville Cemetery is currently the oldest public African American cemetery in western North Carolina. Veterans from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Spanish-American War, and other historical battles are interred within the cemetery. Now cared for by the St. John “A” Baptist Church and the South Asheville Cemetery Association, South Asheville Cemetery remains a reminder of the rich history of African Americans in Buncombe county.

Shiloh AME Zion Church Cemetery
Situated at the heart of the Shiloh community, this active cemetery, along with the Church that cares for it, serves as the core of Shiloh’s history and collective memory for many Shiloh residents. Originally moved from what is now property of the Biltmore Estate, Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Cemetery holds the legacy of the Old Shiloh community, while remaining present for the growth of New Shiloh.
